Genius Cards and Idiot Cards - Which are You Playing?

The hand you got dealt at birth is the hand you will need to play to win at the game of life.  I call this the Hand of God and it's your job to make it work for you and the rest of the world.  This hand will have some terrific cards, I call these your Genius cards, but it will also have some troubling ones, or ones the world does not value very much or ones that put you into chaotic places, I call these your Idiot cards.

Last night I watched the second installment of Ken Burns show on PBS about country music.  As a southerner and someone whose father was a country music singer and song writer I found myself fascinated by this program.  I knew all the singers and song writers they featured.  I even knew most of the words to the songs.  There I was singing along to Your Cheatin' Heart, I'm so Lonesome I Could Die and If You've Got The Money Honey I've Got the Time.  This surprised me as I never thought of myself as a country music fan, but what I know is that those things you learn, hear and experience as a young person stay with you and make an impression, whether you think they do or not. They featured a great may singers and song writers but the main one was Hank Williams.  I had heard about him and listened to most of his music, obviously, since I knew all the words to his songs, but I had never connected him to my daddy and my own life before.

Hank Williams Had Genius Cards but he Also Had Idiot Ones

Hank Williams genius was he could take what happened to him and in a moment of inspired creativity he could write a song that would sell like water to the thirsty.  He also had the genius of a singing voice that touched people clear down to their souls.  Some people called him the Hillbilly Shakespeare.  My daddy loved him and many of his own songs had a Hank Williams vibe.  He looked like him as well - slim and good looking with a charming personality just like Hank, until he started drinking.  That's when daddy's idiot cards showed up and that's what happened to Williams as well.

What are Your Idiot Cards?

I broke away from my daddy in my teenage years and although I came back around to him later on, I always thought he was an idiot, a man who squandered his talents and wasted his life on drink and foolish behavior - he died in a nursing home in his early 60's from an aneurism brought on by alcoholism.  Hank Williams died at 29 years of age from the same idiotic choices.

But what about you?  Do you have idiot cards in your playing hand that cause you problems and make your life difficult?  Maybe they are not as drastic or disastrous as those of my father and Hank Williams but we all have them.  I think it is time to look at your hand and identify your genius cards and your idiot cards and get busy figuring out how to use your genius cards and how to monitor and slow down the dangerous use of your idiot cards.  It's the only way to live a life of health and happiness or as I call it, Wellness Within.
